There is no single best time to see the ships passing through the Panama Canal because they don’t operate on a fixed transit schedule. This is because the ship schedule is determined daily, taking into account various weather and water factors that affect the operation of the interoceanic waterway.
The best advice is:
• If you want to go in the morning, arrive before it opens and get in line as soon as you arrive to be among the first to enter. This way, you can enter without long lines and secure a good spot on the viewing terrace. The Canal opens at 8:00 am.
• Most of the time, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, the flow of ships almost completely stops due to the change in traffic direction.
• If you want to go in the afternoon, it’s best to arrive before 1:30 pm. The flow of ships is more continuous in the afternoon. Public entry is permitted until 5:00 pm. The Canal closes at 6:00 pm.
